Freddie Mercury & Montserrat Caballé
This iconic performance of "Barcelona" was played at the start of the international broadcast for the 1992 Summber Olympics, and it was a tribute to Freddy Mercury who passed away in 1991. The song was originally recorded in 1987, and it became a hit single reaching number 8 in the UK Singles Chart. Freddy Mercury had long admired Montserrat Caballé, and it was he who proposed that they perform together - a British rocker and a Spanish operatic star. I think the admiration they shared is evident in this performance.

Lara Fabian
Composer: Lucio Dalla
Lucio Dalla was inspired to write "Caruso" after staying at the Excelsior Vittoria Hotel in Sorrento, where Enrico Caruso spent some of his final days. The hotel's owner shared stories about Caruso's passion for a young female student, inspiring Dalla to write the song. The song's lyrics are a romanticized account of Caruso's last days, focusing on the themes of love, pain and mortality. No other song makes my eyes tear like this one, and there is no one better than Lara Fabian to perform it. My 60th birthday was spent with the family of a friend in the south of Italy, and there, on a sunny afternoon in a garden, the entire clan broke out into song - Caruso. I think this song runs in the veins of every Italian.

Astor Piazzolla y su quinteto (1969)
Astor Piazzolla is an Argentine composer and performer (he was a brilliant pianist and bandoneonista). The bandoneón, traditionally associated wth Argentine tango, is a square-shapped accordion with keys on both sides, and it produces a more melancholic sound than the traditional accordion. Piazzolla revolutionized traditional tango by introducing a new style known as "tango nuevo" or "new tango." This innovative approach, initially fiercely rejected by the traditionadocss, blended tango with elements of jazz, docs and rock music. It introduced instruments not traditionally associated with tango works, such as the electric guitar, saxophone, flute and electronic instruments. It extended harmonies and dissonance. It incorporated counterpoints and complex compositional forms. All of this is clearly evident in "Adiós Nonino," which Piazzolla wrote in 1959 as a tribute to his father. (And as an aside, the "nonino" occupies a special place in the Argentine family hierarchy.) Piazzolla was a radical, and he turned tango on its head. His works are performed around the world to audiences who recognize his musicality and his genius.

Nina Simone was known for her powerful, emotive vocals which brought depth and intensity to her songs. In my opinion, none of her music falls into the easy-docsening category. I feel her full of rage (many of her songs addressed social issues, racism and inequality), and this rage is channeled into powerful vocals and complex piano arrangements. Still, I recognize her immense talents as a classically trained musician, and one whose prolific contributions made her a "protest" icon of a pre-RAP era. "Go to Hell" is not among her best known songs, but I like it.

Toward the end of his life, Brahms returned to writing for solo piano to compose four intimate, breathtakingly beautiful sets for the instrument (op. 116, 117, 118 and 119). The opening of this last set is unique in that the chromatic tension is so rich and experimental that it almost breaks free from tonality entirely, anticipating the next era of impressionistic and modern music. Writing to his muse Clara Schumann, he wrote this about it: “Every bar and every note must sound like a ritard [slowing down], as if one wanted to suck melancholy out of each and every one, lustily and with pleasure out of these very dissonances!”

Music and lyrics by Leonard Cohen
Leornard Cohen was a renowned Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novedocs celebrated for his profound and introspective works. His lyrics and music are timeless. One of his most famous songs is 'Hallelujah.' The hauntingly beautiful 'Dance me to the End of Love' (1984) has a darker origin than its tender melody suggests, drawing inspiration from the Holocaust. Cohen was moved by the image of musicians playing in the concentration camps as their fellow prisoners were led to their death. The lyrics 'Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin' evoke a sense of finding beauty and love even in the darkest times. The instrumentals are evocative of traditional klezmer music, reflecting Cohen's Jewish heritage.

Димаш Кудайберген
Dimash Kuydaibergen is singer, songwriter and musician from Kazakhstan. He is known for his extraordinary vocal range and versatility. His vocal range spans 6 octaves, and I believe he hits all 6 in this selection. 'Любовь, похожая на сон' (Love, Like a Dream) is one of the most famous Russian pop ballads, written by composer Игорь Крутой (Igor Krutoy) with lyrics by Поэтесса Илья Резник (Ilya Reznik). It became iconic largely because of Алла Пугачёва (Alla Pugacheva), the Soviet and Russian pop diva, who first performed it in the late 1980s. The song has since been covered by many other Russian singers, but Pugacheva’s version is still considered definitive. The lyrics describe a love so powerful and transformative that it feels unreal — almost like a dream. There’s a strong sense of fleeting beauty, with the singer treasuring the memory of love even if it doesn’t last forever. It’s emotional, bittersweet, and very much in line with the dramatic romanticism of late-Soviet pop.
