The human gaze (Art)
Valentin Serov was one of the greatest Russian portraitists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A student of Repin and heir to the traditions of the Peredvizhniki, he quickly went beyond the boundaries of the school. His paintings are, above all, about the gaze. Serov knew how to reveal through the eyes what words conceal: inner strength, hidden weariness, pride, or fragility of the sitter. The most influential figures of Russia entrusted their image to him: writers, actresses, politicians, industrialists. Before his easel sat Gorky, Ermolova, the Morozovs, and members of the imperial family. He was not just a painter — he became a chronicler of his era, capturing in his portraits the very nerve of his time. Serov’s life ended far too soon — at the age of 46, in 1911. Yet his “speaking eyes” still gaze at us from the canvas, reminding us that true art is a dialogue without words.
